How to get a custom app built: the process, timeline and what to prepare

A custom app goes from idea to Google Play in four stages: define the problem, design the experience, build and test, then launch and support. Knowing what each stage needs from you is the quickest way to a good result and a fair price.

1. Define the problem (before any design)

Write down, in plain language:

  • Who is the app for? One main type of user is better than five.
  • What is the one thing it must do well? The first version should do one job properly.
  • How do people do it today? A spreadsheet, WhatsApp, paper? That tells us what to replace.
  • How will you know it worked? More bookings, fewer errors, hours saved.

A short discovery call usually settles all four.

2. Design the experience

Before code, you should see screens you can click through. This is where cheap changes happen: moving a button costs minutes in a design and days once it’s built. Expect to review the flow, the look and the wording, and to sign off before the build starts.

3. Build and test

A focused app is built in short cycles with something you can try at each step. Testing happens on real Android phones, and apps destined for Google Play go through closed testing first. This is the same route our own apps take.

Ask any developer: Does it work offline? How is user data stored and protected? What happens when the phone has no signal? For South African users these aren’t edge cases.

4. Launch and support

Publishing means a Google Play developer account, store listing, screenshots, a privacy policy and a review. Afterwards you’ll want fixes and small improvements, so agree up front how support works.

Budget and timeline

Cost follows scope: the number of screens, whether there are user accounts and payments, whether it needs a server, and how many platforms. Rather than guess, ask for a fixed quote against a written scope. That is how we work: scope first, fixed price, support included, no lock-in.

What to prepare before you contact us

  1. A paragraph describing the problem and who has it.
  2. Three to five things the app must do.
  3. Examples of apps or sites you like (and dislike).
  4. A rough budget band and when you’d like it live.

We build custom apps for founders, from first concept and UX design to a published app on Google Play. Discuss your app idea and tell us what you’re trying to solve.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a custom app take?

It depends on scope. A focused, single-purpose app is far quicker than a multi-role platform. DynamoLabs scopes the work first and gives a fixed quote with a clear timeline.

Will I own the app?

You should, and you should get that in writing. With DynamoLabs there is no lock-in: you own it.

Do you build for iOS as well as Android?

DynamoLabs builds cross-platform apps and ships on Android first, with iOS and Windows following depending on the app.
